of the games in progress.

Boris spent close to 5
minutes looking over this next position which came out of an exciting
King's Gambit. Can you determine how this game concluded? Answers
are at the end of this article.
The final result was 21 wins for Spassky and 5 draws including one
draw against tournament organizer Jerry Weikel !

Boris
Spassky Lecture regarding Chess
Between rounds in the tournament on Saturday, Boris Spassky held
a clinic with interested players in the tournament hall. He played
over a game that occurred in the simultaneous exhibition and came
up with some thoughts for the audience to ponder:
• Eliminate your opponent's active pieces.
• Don't automatically occupy a square when you can do so later,
in line with Nimzovich's the threat is stronger than the execution.
• He felt that Tal was a great chess pirate.
• He showed a puzzle
where the only checkmate in the position was to promote a pawn to
a knight (with your opponent's piece).
• He discussed some classic positions with Bishop's and pawns
that all good players should be aware of. He also dealt with some
examples of setting up stalemate positions in the endgame.
