Chess Now Conducts Tennis Clinics at the 2010 US Open as Reported in Chess Life

At the 111th US Open Chess tournament in Irvine, CA Chess-Now founder and certified tennis professional Jim Egerton conducted several tennis clinics for participants in the tournament.

Chess Life Editor Dan Lucas and Tristan Kaonohi, a USTA player from Hawaii join in the drills.

The entire Canessa family from California, (John, Kate & Lindsey) is having a great time during the drills. John played in the US Open and started his tournament by beating an opponent rated 400 points above him. Maybe the tennis helped while concentrating during his game.

Palm Trees, beautiful weather, gorgeous accomodations at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Irvine CA generated a memorable event for all the chess players. Here the Canessa's take a long range view of the MegaChess pieces they are using as targets on the hotel tennis court.

Open Side Events

Chess isn't the only activity to occupy Open participants. An annual golfing expedtion - a favorite of USCF President Jim Berry - has been on the calendar for a number of years, and this year, tennis was added to the mix. Taking advantage of the court at the playing site, USCF delegate and life member Jim Egerton (below, center), who is also a tennis teaching pro, teaches tennis and chess in his classes as highlighted on his chess-now.com website.

Shown with coach Egerton are US Open participants Tristan Kanonohi (Hawaii) with his mom Susan. The players are holding the Megachess pieces Egerton uses as targets on the tennis court during the drills. (Hit a knight, get three points, a rook five points etc.)

Lindsay Davenport Appearance

Lindsay Davenport from the St. Louis Aces tennis team helped the St. Louis Chess Club celebrate its two year anniversay by playing tennis on a chessboard built in the street located right outside the club. Founder and President of the chess club, Rex Sinquefield is an avid tennis player who brought the celebration together. A block party was held during the US Women's and US Junior's chess championship tournament break day which was going on at the chess club at the time. Participants also got to see the Davenport versus Anna Kournikova tennis match during the championships. Shown below is Lindsay rallying for a point during the fun event, although playing in a formal dress with shoes on certainly can cut into any required court coverage.

Chess and Sports are very much related. Most good players in any competition know the mental side of the games is what makes the difference between winners and losers. Relating knowledge from one game to another is a great way to build upon what you may already know. Learning to make good decisions in life, sports and business is the way to come out ahead. That is what Game, Set, Checkmate is about.
